The Bosch IoT Lab at University St. Gallen, Switzerland, took off! The Lab is a cooperation between Bosch Software Innovations GmbH and the Institute for Technology Management (ITEM-HSG) at the University of St. Gallen. Currently we are a team of seven – university and Bosch employees – working on topics related to connected mobility and smart home. On September 13, 2012 we held our official opening ceremony.

Many guests from Bosch, the University of St. Gallen and politics made use of the opportunity to discuss the changes the internet of things will induce. And I really had the feeling that all participants had good conversations and made interesting new contacts.

A number of speeches addressed the role of the internet of things and of our new lab from different perspectives.

Dr. Heinz Derenbach, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Bosch Software Innovations GmbH, explained that the Internet of Things will revolutionize our economy and that even for a tech company like Bosch cooperation with a reputable university like HSG is mandatory to fully understand these changes.

Benedikt Würth, Member of the Government of St. Gallen, pointed out that the newly established cooperation between Bosch and HSG is a further milestone in making the region of St. Gallen an international center for science and technology.

Prof. Elgar Fleisch, Director at the ITEM-HSG, made an interesting note: We are bound to use the opportunities of new information technologies in a creative and responsible way. In my opinion keeping responsibility in mind while being creative is perfectly in line with the Bosch corporate values.

In his keynote speech Dr. Siegfried Dais, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management of Robert Bosch GmbH, emphasized that the internet of things and services is of major importance for future growth of Bosch and that the new lab plays an important role in discovering promising business models in this new field.

The Ph.D. students of our lab presented first project ideas and concepts. We got very positive feedback and input for further steps. In addition, further projects of HSG, ETH and Bosch were presented and discussed.

So, the Bosch Lab@HSG had a great start. I am very happy having the chance to participate in this great project and I am looking forward to discuss your ideas for business models, technological solutions, …
